Can I enroll in one of the filmmaking course modules by itself?
Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts
The Interconnected Nature of the Lights Film School Curriculum
At this time, it's not possible to enroll in just one of the modules comprising the Lights Film School curriculum. If you want to enroll in Lights Film School and fully complete your studies, then you can expect to work through all six modules.
This is because the craft of filmmaking is inherently multidisciplinary and collaborative. In other words, it involves many different skillsets and many different people, often across many different professional departments.
For example, to be a great director, you have to have a deep understanding of what makes a compelling story, right? So that means you must know about screenwriting! Similarly, directors will be respected by their technical staff if they understand the intricacies of lighting, editing, and sound design. You have to speak their language, at least to an extent. So down the rabbit hole you go!
We train up filmmakers who understand all of the elements of the craft. We help them understand how all of the puzzle pieces fit together. This makes them better filmmakers as well as practitioners of whatever career focus they choose.
But I'm Mostly Interested in [Fill in the Blank]!
We understand that some of our students indeed have a career focus and primary filmmaking interest - be it screenwriting, sound design, cinematography, or something else - and we're eager to help them deepen that specialization, which we do by revealing its relationship to other aspects of filmmaking.
Many times, our students are shocked by their newfound appreciation of filmmaking’s multitude of elements. They grow to love topics they thought would be overly technical or intolerably dry.
Take, for instance, sound design. It’s one of the most important elements of filmmaking, yet it’s often one of the most overlooked! Our curriculum sets out to change this. We're happy to report that our students “hear” the world around them differently after finishing the Sound Design module... It's an awareness that ultimately infuses their approach to other aspects of the craft.
We don't let you cherry-pick modules because you'd walk away with a limited understanding of filmmaking. At Lights Film School, that's not good enough! We're invested in your success, so we'll teach you what you need to know to get there.
Do note that - although we strongly encourage you to progress through the curriculum in the order it's presented - you're welcome to navigate the modules in whatever way works best for you.
